How to Choose a PG in Chandigarh: 12 Things to Check

By Our team · Updated 5 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

A PG is more than a bed. You will eat there, study there and come home to it every night, so a few minutes of checking before you pay can save months of regret. Here is the list our team uses when we visit a PG.

Location and travel

  1. Time your commute. Check the route to your college or office at the hour you'll actually travel. Sectors close to Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg have more bus options.
  2. Walk the street at night. Is it lit? Are there shops and people around? This matters more than a few hundred rupees of rent.

The room

  1. Sharing. Single, double and triple sharing rooms can differ by thousands of rupees. Ask which beds are actually free today.
  2. Ventilation and light. Open the windows. Rooms facing an inner wall can feel stuffy in summer.
  3. Storage. Count the cupboards and drawers per person, not per room.
  4. Bathroom. Attached or shared? How many people share it? Run the geyser.

Food

  1. Ask for the weekly menu and which meals are included on weekends.
  2. Eat one meal before you decide. Most good PGs are happy to let you try.

Safety and rules

  1. CCTV, a guard or a warden — at least one of these should be present, especially in PGs for girls.
  2. Gate timings and visitor rules. Make sure they fit your routine, whether that's late classes or night shifts.

Money

  1. Everything included in the rent. Electricity is the usual surprise. Some PGs include it, others charge for AC use separately.
  2. Deposit and notice. One month's rent as a deposit is common. Ask how many days' notice you must give and when the deposit is refunded.

Tip: ask the PG manager to message you the rent, deposit and what's included. A written answer avoids misunderstandings later.
